“What should young people do with their lives today? Many things, obviously. But the most daring thing is to create stable communities in which the terrible disease of loneliness can be cured.” –Kurt Vonnegut
As an introvert, I have always found comfort in solitude, but my preference for being alone can turn easily into isolation. When life feels overwhelming, I have a natural inclination to burrow deep into my own hidey-hole and stay tucked away in the safety of hermithood. There’s a sense of not wanting to impose my problems on the people around me and another sense that the world simply will not understand.
But that’s the great myth – that we are alone in our struggles and that suffering in silence is the only way. You are not meant to do this alone. You have a voice that was meant to be heard. You have a story that was meant to be shared. You have a heart that was meant to be held. It doesn’t matter what you’re struggling with – anxiety, depression, eating disorders, addiction, abuse, sexual assault, trauma – YOU ARE NOT ALONE. And once you realize that we are one and you are part of a larger whole, healing happens. Empowerment happens. Growth happens. Hope happens.
Change happens through community and community is happening here at oneOeight. I hold your journey and your heart as my own. Welcome to the tribe.
